Leonia Public School District (03-2620)

Leonia Public School District

Located in southeast Bergen County with easy access to Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge, the Leonia Public Schools provide high quality educational services to a diverse student population with an exceptionally rich cultural identity. We are a pre K-12 district employing over 300 professional educators and support personnel who serve 1840 students. Our community expands in grades 7-12 to include students from Edgewater.

Our work is founded upon a proud legacy of educational aspiration and achievement. As evidenced by a history of successful building and budget referenda, support for education is an enduring characteristic of our community. Completion of the expansion of the Leonia Middle School is a tangible expression of that support as are recently approved capital improvements in each of our buildings. Other examples of District innovation include our Early Childhood Program and the Leonia High School Academies. Small class size and close student-teacher relationships further distinguish the educational experience.

Each school report card provides important data about our success to date. The available numbers tell a positive story of a system whose performance compares favorably with peer school systems and with systems from wealthier district factor groups. They show that we continue to manage scarce resources efficiently. The nature of our tax base and associated fiscal pressures make it even more urgent to directly focus resources on teaching and learning. We are doing just that: our expenditures across the major cost categories remain below state averages.

Each school in our system is a source of pride and each report card verifies that our pride is well placed. Education, however, is fundamentally about safeguarding the future. As good as we have been, as good as we are, we know that we have much to do renew our legacy and reinvigorate our practices. We are eager to meet this challenge.
