Teaneck School District

Dear Teaneck Parents, Guardians and Community Members:

I am pleased to present the annual narrative about the Teaneck Public Schools. Located only a few miles from New York City, our District is a fine blend of urban sophistication and the suburban lifestyle. Our students enjoy abundant playgrounds, recreational facilities and a Teaneck Creek Park with walking trails and an educational center. The Board of Education employs approximately 400 teachers to educate the more than 3680 students in our pre-K-12 school system. Our seven schools are richer learning environments because of their cultural diversity. Teaneck students represent many cultures, with more than 48 languages spoken in their homes.

The Teaneck Board of Education adopted the following mission: The educational community of Teaneck will consist of schools that empower the whole child. We shall attain excellence; revere personal integrity, honor diverse perspectives and nurture meaningful relationships. Our schools shall encourage students to brave life’s journey and strive to conquer the unknown. All of our initiatives, from the implementation of our pre-k 3 and pre-k 4 programs for our youngest learners to the development of new Advanced Placement (AP) and STEM courses at Teaneck High School, serve that mission.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, we provided professional development to teachers and administrators on edConnect, an online tool that that supports data-driven education by integrating assessment, data management, instructional support resources and curriculum and planning. In addition, we provided professional development in content-based instructional resources and strategies to engage students in learning. All of this professional development work is aimed at improving instruction, learning and assessment.

We continued our trend of increasing the percentage of students who scored proficient on the biology end-of-course assessment. We offered fourteen Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Teaneck High School and increased by 100 the number of students who took AP exams. A goal for the 2016-2017 academic year is to increase the percentage of students who are scoring a 3 or higher on the AP exams.
The District continued to offer summer preview classes in Social Studies, Language Arts and Algebra for incoming ninth graders. We provided after-school and summer literacy and math programs to support students who need additional academic assistance.

The NJDOE school performance reports will provide additional information about how our students performed on state assessments. What the reports do not include are the many amazing things our students have learned and done. Our students have given outstanding performances in vocal music, instrumental music, dance, and theater. Our students have presented fine art shows at the elementary, middle and high school level. Science students have generated innovative projects for science fairs. Culinary arts students participated in an Iron Chef competition to demonstrate their skill and creativity in the kitchen. The High School Robotics Team completed and placed third in the Panasonic Creative Design Challenge. Our scholar athletes practiced diligently and competed with great sportsmanship, winning championships in girls’ fencing and boys’ basketball. Across the district students raised money for many charitable causes and performed thousands of hours of community service. The class of 2016 was awarded over eight million dollars in scholarships. Our students continue to be our greatest asset!
