Kearny (17-2410)

Located in the vibrant, culturally-diverse community of Kearny, between the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers in western Hudson County, the Kearny School District serves more than 6,100 students in grades pre-K through 12. The District is comprised of five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, offering a 21st century curriculum to meet the many needs of its diverse community of learners.

The Kearny School District is committed to providing an excellent education and challenging learning opportunities for all students. The District’s Strategic Plan outlines several goals that were developed and approved through the combined efforts of community members, staff, administrators and members of the Board of Education. One of the resulting goals is a strong commitment to increase student achievement while promoting academic excellence. Additional highlights of the district’s plan include strengthening community relations, providing and promoting the effective use of social media literacy skills for 21st century learning, and increasing the use of regularly-scheduled technology throughout the District, while balancing fiscal responsibility with a true commitment to the community and its children.

To sustain an environment which supports rigorous and challenging learning opportunities for all students, Kearny has undertaken several new initiatives. Advancements in STEM education have been realized through the district’s participation in the WIPRO Science Education Fellowship, a teacher-leadership program funded by the WIPRO Organization. Additional curriculum enhancements and digital resources are now available in English language arts, mathematics, and science, in further support of the District’s commitment to educational achievement. Similarly, arts education is provided throughout the district and the music program continues to flourish. College and Career Readiness is a priority at all grade levels, and our high school students are afforded opportunities to explore career training in dental assisting, medical assisting, culinary arts, and automotive technology. They also have the unique opportunity to earn college credits through Advanced Placement courses and on-site partnerships with Hudson County Community College, DeVry University, and the Culinary Institute of America. Similarly, technology improvements ensure the availability of greater bandwidth and wireless capabilities to support instructional technology, blended learning and State testing. Our students are further encouraged to participate in extra-curricular and co-curricular clubs, activities and sports.

Providing meaningful professional development for our teaching staff is a district priority, and staff members are offered opportunities for building-level and District-wide professional learning communities. In addition, educational workshops conducted in concert with other school districts, educational service providers, and neighboring colleges and universities are made available.

Working together to accomplish a common goal – providing a safe and nurturing environment that supports rigorous and challenging learning opportunities for all students – has been evident throughout the entire school community. The Kearny School District has charted a course for success, and the Board of Education, administrators, teachers, and support staffs have collectively endorsed the effort in order to ensure a future of educational excellence.
