Roxbury Township School District

I take pleasure presenting the 2016-2017 New Jersey District Performance Report for the Roxbury Township Public School District. This district narrative provides our school district's stakeholders with important data regarding the district's programs, test scores, staff and student attendance data, financials, and other pertinent information.

The Roxbury Township Public School District is a pre-school through 12th grade educational program that serves approximately 3,700 students in seven schools. Our school district provides students with an exceptional education, empowering them to become problem solvers, collaborators, creators, innovators, and critical thinkers. Our student population is diverse and is comprised of many groups including economically disadvantaged and special education. This complex demographic presents many challenges but also affords us the opportunity to structure the teaching and learning process in an environment which replicates a global perspective for our students.

Our district motto is "To Prepare the Children of Today for Tomorrow". Having this focus, we believe one of the most effective ways to meet the needs of all learners is to provide our instructional staff with relevant professional development experiences both in and out of district which enables them to connect classroom lessons to their students' lives outside of school. It is critical that academic rigor is delivered through a framework relevant for pupils regardless of socio-economics, heritage, or prior achievement. Our professional development opportunities for faculty and staff ensure that appropriate instructional methods, skills, practices, and current content knowledge are utilized in all lessons, with an overarching focus of an educational experience continuum that prepares all students for their individual futures in an ever-changing global landscape.

Our academic programs continue to be current, reflecting mandated requirements, as well as meeting the needs of our students. Initiatives are ongoing to address the state standardized assessment needs and to foster classroom success for all of our children to achieve the desired results. Over the past several years, the district has implemented Math in Focus, Reader's and Writer's Workshop, expanded S.T.E.A.M., and elective opportunities for our students. This year F.O.S.S., an investigative and exploratory science program with a focus on science integration, literacy strategies, and technology that is aligned to the NGSS, will be implemented in grades three through five. We expect students to be active participants in the learning process. Teachers continue to enhance student comprehension, improve upon classroom instruction, infuse technology, and meet the needs of children.

We believe that technology is an integral part of the learning process. It is utilized to empower individual staff members as facilitators and enables students to function as self-directed learners, complex thinkers, collaborative workers, and effective communicators as they bring relevant information to bear upon personal/professional problems. To this end, all of our schools have wireless capability. We have successfully implemented One-to-One Initiative where students in grades seven through twelve have been afforded a personal Google Chrome Book while students in grades five and six utilize classroom sets of Chrome Books. The students in Kindergarten through grade four have an abundance of technology options such as iPads and classroom carts of Google Chrome books. All classrooms throughout the district have interactive white boards to help improve student learning and advance technology skills from K-12. In addition, teachers, parents, and students have real-time access to grades and attendance through our student information system, Genesis.

The students of Roxbury achieve in both the academic classroom and in areas of athletic achievement and cultural enrichment. Our students are very competitive in the area of academic achievement when compared to their peers. The Roxbury School District became an Inter-district School of Choice for the Fine and Performing Arts in 2014, opening the doors to our nationally recognized programs in the fine and performing arts to students from other districts.

Roxbury Public Schools are also striving to become Sustainable Jersey Schools. Sustainable Jersey certification is a highly regarded designation for schools in our state. It signifies that our faculties and staff are continuously supporting sustainable practices in schools; and actively educating our students about responsible environmental management and conservation.

As we work towards promoting an economically viable atmosphere in our district, Roxbury remains fully committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students and community. This year we were fortunate to welcome aboard a district-wide security director to evaluate our school buildings and emergency procedures, and develop recommendations to enhance our protocols in the event of a critical situation. In addition, we were the first district in the nation to have Trauma Kits installed in all of our schools.

I am proud of the efforts and accomplishments of our students and staff, and I look forward to continuing our efforts with parents and the community in providing our students with the best education possible.
