Berkeley Township School District

Welcome to the Berkeley Township School District. It is an honor to serve as the superintendent of a school district that excels in progressive educational theory and reform, yet recognizes that each student is an individual. We utilize NWEA Map testing to determine where students’ strengths and weaknesses lie to meet their needs at an individual level and provide instruction in order to increase student growth.

We will introduce a new Math curriculum this fall for all kindergarten through grade five students. This program will have an online component that will provide parents with an easy to follow resource for nightly homework. It is aligned with the Common Core Standards and will focus on engaging and challenging our students.

A One-to-One Initiative will be implemented this school year, providing every first through sixth grade student in our district with a Chromebook. This program will improve student technology skills, provide more research and collaboration opportunities, increase student engagement, and affect student achievement. Kindergarten students will have the opportunity to utilize iPads for learning and kindergarten teachers will also provide instruction on interactive whiteboards.

We will host the third Ocean Ed Tech Expo where teachers and administrators in Ocean County are provided the opportunity to attend workshops for strategies to implement technology in the classrooms.

Maintaining a safe and secure school environment for our students and staff will remain a number one priority. Thank you to Mayor Carmen Amato, Police Chief Karin DiMichele, and the members of the Berkeley Township Board of Education for their continued commitment to the shared service of providing active police officers in each of our schools. These police officers serve as members of the school security teams, develop positive relationships with the students, and add an additional layer of security for our students and staff.

As a recipient of the Race to the Top Preschool Expansion Grant from the New Jersey Department of Education, our district will offer a full day preschool program to assist economically disadvantaged four year old children, as well as a half day developmentally appropriate preschool program at all three of our lower elementary schools.

We encourage parents to become involved in the education of their children. This can be accomplished through frequent communication with the teachers, attendance at Back to School Night, and participation in the Parent Teacher Associations. We greatly appreciate the many activities our PTA members provide for our students, including their combined efforts last year for Mix-It-Up Day. The spirit of cooperation and dedication to the common goal of making this a fun experience for our students was evident during this district-wide event.

It is important for all parents and guardians to access the Parent Portal section of the district website. This site provides an opportunity for parents to update contact information, access progress reports, report cards, and set up online payments for cafeteria accounts.

Thank you to the community for your dedication and support of the Berkeley Township School District. Your input is always welcome as we take on the important task of educating tomorrow’s citizens; our children are our best resource. We are committed to providing them with an education that addresses their intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development.

We wish all of our families a happy and healthy 2016-2017 school year.
