Bernards Township School District (35-0350)

Bernards Township School District

The Board of Education is committed to providing the students in Bernards Township with the highest quality of education possible so that they will be prepared to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. The district includes four neighborhood elementary schools with grade levels K-5, a middle school for grades 6-8 and a comprehensive high school for students in grades 9-12. Student enrollment is expected to decline gradually overall in the next decade, but varies by grade level. Middle school and high school enrollment is anticipated to be very stable until the decline at the elementary level moves up through the grades. Overall, enrollment went down by 100 students this year.

Our educational professionals are key to success. We have outstanding administrative leadership combined with a highly educated teaching staff. The enthusiastic leaders work with our professional staff to bring fresh ideas to the classroom, the athletic fields and in our varied extracurricular activities, enabling us to meet our responsibility to make our schools a broad network of learning for children in Bernards Township. The administrators and teachers partner together to work as problem solvers to deal with the ever changing landscape of student needs. For example, these problem solvers have collaborated to implement new programs in the areas of STEM, gifted and talented education and sign language. Our teachers and administrative team also play key roles in achieving our district goals.

Our newest district goals include:

• Improve academic outcomes for students.
• Improve the social, emotional, health and well-being outcomes for students.
• Establish a Technology Steering Committee to make recommendations regarding the district’s long term technology needs that best support district goals one and two.

Our intent is to make the nature of instruction student-centered, utilizing technology to make learning accessible and challenging to the full spectrum of students while simultaneously infusing rigor and relevance throughout the curriculum. Our character education initiative involves understanding the traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship, and applying these traits to actions in daily life. The social pressures for academic achievement and competition for rewards create a great deal of stress in the minds of our children. Our district is committed to being responsive in this regard so as to not add unnecessary burdens to our students.

The Bernards Township schools are an intrinsic piece of the fabric of our community. If you have ideas on improvement or suggestions for expanding opportunity for our students, we welcome your interest.
