Montague Township is located in the Delaware Highlands Region of New Jersey. High Point State Park and Stokes State Forest provide the scenery to this rural Sussex County community. Montague Township School District is a Pre-K through grade 8 school in Sussex County. Montague students attend High Point Regional High School for grades 9 through 12. Sussex County Technical School and parent choice school are also options for students.

Montague School continues to provide all children with opportunities to maximize their potential. The diverse learning needs, styles and abilities of Montague School’s children are met through the continued process of evaluating the district’s innovative programs to ensure student benefit and achievement. LEAP and PEP, the district’s Gifted and Talented programs, are available at all grade levels. Cross- content enrichment classes support the learning process through multi-disciplinary activities. Art Enrichment and Library Enrichment, two very successful programs, motivate and inspire creativity. Basic Skills Instruction, a team teaching and in-class support process, assists students in meeting their individual learning needs.

Montague School has a rigorous curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Standards with literacy skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) the focus and priority. Curriculum activities based on career and college readiness, real world experiences and higher-order thinking skills provide the assessment data for faculty to identify individual student strengths and weaknesses. Art, Music, Health/Physical Education, Study Island, Technology and World Cultures are integrated into the core subject areas.

Montague School believes that the telecommunications network is a tool to assist in preparing students for success as productive citizens of the world by providing them with the electronic access to a wide range of information and the ability to communicate with people throughout the world. As such, all classrooms have interactive white boards, including the Art Room, Library/Media Center and Computer Lab. The Library/Media Center includes computers for student use. The Computer Lab is complete with thirty student computers and projection system. Sound amplification systems are available in all homerooms, the Art Room, Library/Media Center, Computer Lab and lunch room. Tablets, both IPADS and Chrome Books, are available for student use in the classrooms. Every student in grades four through eight have access to a Chrome Book daily to enrich and support learning. Montague School is a Weather Bug Tracking Station providing real time weather data for the school and community. Weather Bug Achieve, the teacher component, provides support material for the design of math and science lessons with connections and applications to life situations.

Montague School faculty meets New Jersey Highly Qualified Teacher requirements. Three hold National Board Certification. All instructional paraprofessionals meet Highly Qualified Paraprofessional requirements. Administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries, support and facility staff ensures that Montague’s children receive the best possible education in a safe and positive environment. The curriculum goals are supported through the collaborative efforts of the BSI Coordinator, LEAP Coordinator, ESL Coordinator, Learning Consultant (LDTC), School Counselor, School Nurse, School Psychologist, School Social Workers, Speech and Language Specialist, Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist. Grade level teams, the Intervention and Referral Team and the Child Study Team support student achievement goals.

Montague School has an established school wide code of conduct for students, staff and volunteers. Monty’s’ High Five provides the foundation for the Monty Bucks positive behavior incentive program and Student of the Month recognition program. Student activities include Student Council, Peer Leaders, and LEAD, PALS-mentor program, Sunny Seeds Girls Group, chorus, band, Bell Choir and basketball. Older students are regular helpers in the lower grades and buddy with the kindergarten students. Student Council projects focus on community service through collaboration with various community organizations. Student Council maintains the Montague Township Road Department’s flower box and purchased the school’s “Buddy Bench” for the playground. The Student Council also sponsors school spirit days and school dances. Each year, the sixth grade attends the Middle School Character Education Summit and the seventh grade participates in a team building day at Linwood MacDonald Camp. The Art Club’s original drawings were donated to the Goryeb Children’s Hospital Wing at Morristown Memorial Hospital and are on permanent display. The Art Club worked with the town historian to create a mural commemorating Montague Township’s 250th anniversary. The mural is displayed in the main lobby of the school.

Montague School’s parents, volunteers and community contribute to the school’s success. The administration encourages parent involvement and recognizes the correlation between parent involvement and a child’s success in school. Volunteers work in the library and classrooms assisting with special projects and activities. Community members frequently share their cultural, historical, musical and literary wisdom in the classroom. Parents and the community are kept informed through the school website, student/parent handbook and calendar, the Bear’s Paw newsletter and The Principal’s Committee. The PTA sponsors a variety of educational and family activities throughout the year. Assembly programs, book fairs, holiday shop, school store, family fun nights, Father-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son event and the annual Bear Breakfast to name a few. The Municipal Alliance Grant funds student focused programs including the Sunny Seeds Girls Group, LEAD and team building events for fifth and sixth grade students.

Montague School recognizes that community business and agency involvement provides a benefit to the children and is a vital link to the success of school programs. Student work is proudly displayed at local businesses in the township. The Montague Fire Department, Sussex County Sheriffs Department and New Jersey State Police provide safety programs each year. Montague School participates in The Sussex County Sheriff’s Department Walk-Through Program. The KEEP program provides before and after school care. Trailblazers and Linwood MacDonald Camps, provide safety and anti-bullying programs each year. The school is home to recreational activities sponsored by the township. The district also partners with the township for Clean Community activities.

The Board of Education and Administration of the Montague Township School District continue to provide educational programs that allow children to reach their potential on their journey to academic excellence.
