Sussex-Wantage Regional School District

Over the past several years, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has focused on instructional innovation by blending leading edge educational technology and quality traditional instructional strategies. Our progressive curricular offerings focus on the district mission: “To educate each individual to become a confident, competent lifelong learner and productive, responsible citizen by providing challenging opportunities through the partnership of families, school and the community.”

The Sussex-Wantage Regional School District is committed to its ongoing quest to focus on all of the students' academic, social, emotional and developmental needs. The core content areas are all addressed in "state-of-the-art" fashion. Some examples of this approach include: the use of Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop in English Language Arts K-8; staff development activities through Conquer Math in conjunction with the Envisions Math series; and the implementation of Discovery Techbook in Science grades 3-8 as well as in Social Studies grades 5-8.

The district's Gephard Environmental Center provides opportunities for students to study environmental science and a host of related curricular activities in a local outdoor setting. As part of the district's character education program the Gephard Environmental Center site is used for team building and Project Adventure Activities.

In addition to core curricular areas, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District continues to provide a well-balanced program in music, physical education, art media science and Spanish. Our special area teaching staff provide quality instruction in each of these curricular areas.

Student assessment is a critical component to the district's quest to educate each individual. In addition to the results from the State assessment (PARCC) and the Diagnostic Reading Assessment (DRA), the district has initiated the highly sophisticated ongoing assessment tool Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) which will help the staff analyze and remediate student progress in Language Arts Literacy and mathematics.

The district has a sophisticated approach in regard to serving the diverse needs of the entire student body. The principals, counselors, nurses, school psychologists, learning consultants and social workers coordinate efforts to help analyze individual student needs and coordinate corrective strategies. For those youngsters in need of Special Services, the district provides a broad range of services and programs beginning in preschool continuing through grade 8. Additionally, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District offers a summer program in special education as well as beforecare, aftercare and summer programs to assist working parents.

Without a doubt, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District works in cooperation with parent and community organizations to provide programs for students and their families. The district provides Back to School Nights, Family Math and Reading Nights, Parent Academy Workshops as well as other events designed to assist the parents and answer inquiries about the district's curriculum strategies and initiatives.
