The Berkeley Heights School District provides a high-quality education to approximately 2,660 students in six district schools- Mary Kay McMillin Early Childhood Center (Grades Pre-Kindergarten through 1); Mountain Park School, Thomas P. Hughes School and William Woodruff School (all Grades 2 through 5); Columbia Middle School (Grades 6 through 8) and Governor Livingston High School (Grades 9 through 12). In addition to serving the public school students of Berkeley Heights, high school students from the neighboring Borough of Mountainside are educated at Governor Livingston High School.

The mission of the Berkeley Heights School District, a community partnership that values the direct relationship between excellent education and individual success, is to challenge students to explore, to excel, and to embrace a lifetime of learning. Our school district does so by developing a staff devoted to excellence, applying resources effectively, fostering a culture of mutual respect and integrity, and offering engaging academic curricula and diverse co-curricular programs.

Academic excellence is a long-standing tradition in the Berkeley Heights Public Schools, and the pursuit of learning and intellectual growth is the primary component of the school district’s culture. The performance of our students on many standardized tests ranks among the absolute best in the entire state of New Jersey. Over 95% of last year’s graduates of Governor Livingston High School are continuing their education at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Governor Livingston students consistently achieve high SAT scores, as evidenced by the 1641 mean score for the class of 2016.

These impressive statistics represent the end result of a 13-year scholastic journey experienced by the students of Berkeley Heights. The learning and achievement of students is the product of the outstanding efforts of our district’s teachers, educational support staff, and administrators. Over 60% of the professional staff members in our district hold a Master’s Degree, while another 3.5% possess a Doctorate. But that only tells part of the story. Educators in Berkeley Heights are continuously being taught and trained in the latest teaching techniques and strategies, and these same teachers are constantly observed, coached, and counseled by a team of administrators in order to ensure that their teaching performance in the classroom is of the highest caliber. Like their students, our teachers’ quest for learning, knowledge, and personal growth never ends.

Our district’s academic offerings are augmented by a program of co-curricular activities that is second to none. Opportunities for enriching experiences in the realms of the fine and performing arts, publications, service organizations, student government, and academic clubs – as well as athletics – are available to all students. The amazing level of talent exhibited by Berkeley Heights students while participating in our co-curricular programs represents a continuum of excellence that has become a hallmark of our school district. We are proud to present the New Jersey School Report Card for your review, and we appreciate your interest in the Berkeley Heights School District.
